![]() 1920s The 1920’s was known as the “Roaring Twenties” and the music of the day was Jazz. Controversial throughout its history, jazz was America's first contribution to the music world. Small jazz duos and trios replaced the bigger bands. Illegal havens were popular with dancing and gambling, providing freedom for races to intermingle, inspiring songs like Duke Ellington’s “Black and Tan Fantasy”. Women began wearing more comfortable clothes like trousers and shorter skirts, cosmetics were in and hair was bobbed whilst men’s fashion became less formal. Paul Whiteman, Al Jolson, Mamie Smith, and Ted Lewis and his Orchestra were at the top of the charts. Dances like the Charleston, the Foxtrot and the cake walk were especially popular. King Oliver blended multiple styles mixing in the blues and pop songs. "Dippermouth Blues" was his big hit and featured, a fully developed trumpet solo (a first for Jazz). Another famous jazz player was Louis Armstrong who played with King Oliver's band at the beginning of the 1920s, later Armstrong successfully played around the world and experimented with most musical styles, including gospel and Hawaiian as well as other popular music of the twenties. 1940’s By the time we get to the 1940s , the decade of the crooner, famous musical names include Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Benny Goodman, The Andrews Sisters and many other legends with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong dominating the jazz scene. Fashion leaned more toward the feminine side with cardigans, knee length dresses, pencil skirts and polka-dots. However, times were tough for the music industry as it was mostly listened to on the radio which censored most of the music. 2020’s A hundred years on, in the 2020’s, we see the past popular sounds becoming the present music trend with modern songs played in the vintage style of the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. Our fantastic Vintage bands and Singers are proving to be popular for weddings, parties and corporate events.
